Experts suggest that there are clear differences between leadership and management despite many people, particularly those in management, believing them to be the same thing.

However, research has found that those who treat leadership and management as separate entities tend to do better in business. So what are the distinctions between the two disciplines?

Leadership tends to focus more on inspiring followers, being willing to take risks to achieve your goals, being highly motivational and possessing qualities which reflect the ethos and culture of the company.

Management is more directed towards the running of day to day tasks, looking after budgets, establishing objectives and directing teams towards a common goal.

To narrow the definition down to its simplest form, it could be said that leaders lead people and managers manage tasks. Management focuses on the daily operation of a business, budgeting, and deadlines, whereas leaders are focussed on inspiring others, visionary and head towards long term achievements.

Most experts would conclude that a truly great leader must possess both sets of skills in order to be as effective as possible. Finding someone who encompasses all the skills associated with both leadership and management is a rare thing, but those who do possess all these skills are generally highly successful.

Many strong leaders would agree that the key to achieving both successful leadership and management is to find the balance between the two disciplines. Many MD’s fall into the trap of becoming overwhelmed with managing the day to day running of their business, forgetting that part of their job also entails inspiring their team and directing them towards a common goal.

Adversely, some business owners are constantly focussed on the bigger picture, which means that they can miss small details that affect the smooth running of their company.

Leadership and Management Training is always positive, even for those in the upper echelons of a company who perhaps feel they have seen and heard it all. Training can re-inspire managers and create a wealth of new ideas and innovations that will encourage leaders to cascade their knowledge through to their staff, having a positive knock on effect for the entire company.

Training is great for leaders who feel that they may be stagnating as it provides a wonderful opportunity to refresh skills and to learn about new techniques which can be utilised to improve business.To become a truly inspiring leader requires great passion.
